The Problem

Some small businesses do not know how to properly market to their local areas and grow their local customers. In this blog, we are going to discuss three different strategies to help small businesses maximize their marketing efforts within their communities.

Strategy #1

One of the most prominent aspects of tailoring your marketing to target local customers is having a strong SEO strategy. When your website ranks well with search engines, it is more likely to show higher on search results. This not only will help your business get more exposure, but users are more likely to click on one of the top three URLs instead of going to page two or three of the search results.

A few strategies that can help your website’s SEO are creating content with relevant keywords and phrases, adding descriptive meta descriptions to each page, and making sure that your website is mobile-friendly. These efforts will help search engines understand and identify what each page is about and properly grade them in order to determine their rankings in search engines.

Strategy #2

Have an up-to-date Google My Business profile. Google My Business profiles are shown when users search for your business or, for example, search “dentists near me.” Google shows nearby dentist offices and their locations on a map, also known as their Google My Business profiles.

When updating or creating your Google My Business profile, make sure to fill out as much information as possible. Include your business’ name, hours, business description, logo, relevant photos, list of services, and the address. This information is used by Google to assess how relevant your business is to what people are searching for. Having a ramped-up Google My Business page will help your small business rank better locally because Google can better determine what your business does.

Lastly, work on gathering customer reviews on Google My Business. An easy way to ask for reviews is asking customers right after your small business finishes working with them. Another way is to send out an email with a link that directs them to your Google My Business review page asking them to leave a review.

Strategy #3

Utilize social media. If your small business can connect with people via social media, it helps to grow your brand awareness. Social media is also a great way to stay connected with your current and prospective customers. By having up-to-date profiles on platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter, users are able to find your small business easier and might end up following your pages.

Another great perk to utilizing social media is including your small business’ profile links on your website. Having the links on the site helps users find your profiles and gives them another way to get in touch with your business.

If you have social media accounts set up, make sure your small business is posting at least once a week and is actively engaging with users if they message you or comment on your posts.

In conclusion, there are many ways to enhance your small business’ local customer retention strategy. Each type of business requires a slightly different marketing strategy, and paying attention to how your local customers engage online can help you have the upper hand in local marketing.
